Domino is a large set of small, oblong tiles marked with 0-6 pips in each half. It’s most commonly used to play the game of dominoes, in which players attempt to build a line of dominoes with matching values on each end. The first domino to fall, either by player action or the bouncing of a piece by another domino, triggers a chain reaction that continues until all the pieces have fallen. The term is also used to refer to any kind of line-up, or sequence, where one piece sets off a series of events that culminate in the end result.
When you think of a domino effect, it’s often of something monumental and spectacular, like a line of hundreds or even thousands of dominoes set up in carefully calculated order, all toppling with the slightest nudge from the first one. You might have seen a demonstration of this type in a movie or on television, or even at a live show where a domino artist creates a mind-blowing sequence before a live audience.
The domino effect is much more powerful than we realize. A study conducted by University of British Columbia physicist Lorne Whitehead found that, on average, a domino can knock over objects about one-and-a-half times its size. This is due to the fact that most of the energy from a falling domino is converted to kinetic energy, which transmits to the next domino to give it the push it needs to fall. The domino effect is also why it’s possible to build structures so tall that they’re visible from space.
In comics, Domino is a mutant who uses her “luck” powers to thwart villainy. She’s been a member of the X-Men, worked for Professor X and his new black ops organization, and even traveled to Hong Kong with Wolverine and the now-deceased Vanisher to investigate mutant rights violations.
Domino was actually the subject of a top-secret government breeding program intended to develop the perfect weapon, but her “luck” powers caused her to lose out in the selection process against the other test subjects. Her biological mother broke her out of the project, and she became a mercenary.
In 2010, Domino’s CEO and founder Dave Brandon hired a consulting firm to design an app that would allow customers around the world to place orders with the company. It was a huge undertaking, and the development process took more than 12 months. But the app has proven to be a significant part of a larger strategy to make Domino’s a global leader in digital commercial business. The company has built the highest capacity e-commerce network in the industry and is pushing hard to keep it on the forefront of customer experience. The Domino’s Digital channel continues to grow rapidly and help the company achieve a host of milestones. But more importantly, the capabilities it has created are a major contributor to the company’s growth and success.
