The Hong Kong Prize, one of Asia’s most prestigious science awards, rewards research with global impact and encourages young scientists to pursue careers in science. Its non-governmental merit-based award scheme not only provides monetary prizes to winners but also gives them the opportunity to conduct their research in Hong Kong.
The winners of the 2023 hk prize were announced at a ceremony in Hong Kong Palace Museum, with 35 scientists receiving prizes across eight categories: life science, computer science, plant research, chemistry, physical science, mathematics and physics. This year’s laureates are the most prolific ever, ranging in age from seasoned scientists born in the 1940s to young researchers in their thirties. The ceremony was part of the Future Science Week, which made its debut in Hong Kong this week.
A total of HK$9.3 million in cash and other awards will be distributed to the top 10 performers. The runner-up will receive HK$5 million, while a second-place winner will receive HK$3 million, and third place finishers will each get HK$1.8 million. Moreover, the first place winner of each competition will also receive an additional HK$3 million to boost their training and competitiveness.
Veteran actor, director and martial arts legend Sammo Hung received a lifetime achievement award at this year’s Hong Kong Film Awards. He was honoured for his work in police-and-robbers dramas including Raging Fire, which won best director and action choreography at the 40th ceremony, which took place in front of a full house.
The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) has appointed former actress and singer Anita Mui as its new president. Mui, who will take up her post in June, is the third woman to head the academy since HKAPA’s foundation in 1996. The HKAPA is a leading performing arts academy in the city, with its mission to nurture and develop talented young artistes and to serve the local community by creating high-quality performing arts and entertainment in Hong Kong.
HK Science and Technology Innovation Prize 2024
The BOCHK SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION PRIZE (the “Prize”), sponsored by the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, aims to reward outstanding scientists who have done pioneering scientific work in the field of the Greater Bay Area with significant influence on R&D transformation in Hong Kong, Macao and the Chinese mainland. The Prize will honor up to five recipients (individual or team) per category, with each recipient receiving a sum of HK$2 million and a trophy. Each award category will set up its own final judging panel. This is to ensure consistency and high judging standards for the Award.
